We have been living off the grid in NC for the last 10 years, developing solar power systems with battery backup, primitive rainwater harvesting and filtration systems, wildcrafting, and raising animals and vegetable gardens that provide most of the food we need for our small family of 4. We also run a green building business where we build energy efficient homes and custom cabinetry, sourcing reclaimed materials and milling our own lumber with a portable sawmill. We're hoping to inspire confidence in people that want to build a better home and live a more self-reliant lifestyle.

#biosandfilter #rainwater #cistern Using a biosand filter, Logan demonstrates exactly HOW we collect and filter rainwater from our house with a slow sand filter, collect it in a cistern and pump it into our house. This rainwater harvesting system relies on gravity for collection and filtration, so there's no electricity required up to the cistern. From there, we use a jet pump to get pressurize...

Love this system and the look more than any other method and design I've seen so far. It's very clean looking, but how well does it hold up? Let say someone falls or pushes against the railing - will it hold up?
Great informative video.
Can you use stucco on these?
Cant seem to keep my cables tight. Anyone have an issue with these fequently loosening up over time??
Just what I needed 💞- but the music irritates me - 😕 rather just hear the instructions Thanks!
Has anyone installed this in a vertical position??
Finally a "normal" looking straw/cob/adobe house! This is how I will build our home!
I have wanted to build a strawbale house for at least 29 years now.
What’s the purpose of the foreground music, because it’s so loud it’s definitely not background music. When you are trying to share information don’t have anything competing with the source.
Nice! I need to drill completely through into some thick black locust poles...what type of drill is that you're using? My old Craftsman auger just doesn't have the umphhh needed...thanks!
It’s a Milwaukee hole hawg, good luck!
So why not give a prive for building such a home compared to a traditional stick built home? I would think many people would want to know just how much of a savings it really is.
in 1999 we bought a farm in Perry county, Arkansas. the water system was water pumped from our 1 acre STOCK POND(used by horses, cows, goats, dogs, a donkey, etc.... to drink from and wade in) to a 2 chamber sand filter and then pumped directly into the house to drink, shower, flush etc... the filter was 1 large rectangular tank with a divider going to within 4 inches from the bottom and filled to within 8 inches from the top with SAND on one side and only 12 inches deep on the other side. a submersible pump in the pond pumped to the high sand side through a float valve on the side of the tank. from there the water filtered down to the bottom and up into the other side of the tank and the height was the same as the other side. water was piped from the clean side via the intake pipe from a jet pump that went up the outside of the tank over the edge and down into the tank about a foot, where a screen was attached. this sand filter was originally used to filter the well water, but the water table was low, because the highway department had blasted the old bridge and water was flowing from our well out the side of the bank and into the river! we didnt have much water used the filter to filter pond water! before i moved in 2006, we put 3 IBC tanks side beside in a basement addition and then used REVERSE OSMOSIS and DC POWERED UV LAMPS IN HOME MADE MANIFOLD.
I searched the comments but couldn't find an answer. Sorry if its been asked and answered already. What do yo do at the peak? How is the peak addressed? Thanks for the video.
Between the wind and the music I heard nothing of this...
in eastern europe most old houses in the country side were build with straws, mudbricks ,rammed earth, underground earhhomes , people usualy torn them down and use new materials; But after watching this kinds of videos i came to the realisation that if you want a toxic free, cheap and fast home , straw bales are the best way to go
I think Dancing Rabbit has also abandoned the clay behind plaster method as well. Sorry that all this work has to be redone.
Loved to see true honest professional. Always learning and different methods are more efficient for many on the fly challenges. It's not a flaw when a tradesman backs up to insure professionalism. Right on donkey kong
I wish you had address that corner post.
Professional youtube commenter here. Why couldn't you have just slide some steel pipe over those handles to make a "cheater" setup. Oh well, love the look tho! Think I'm going to attempt this myself!
Good idea
Will this withstand hairline cracks when a nail is hammered into that wall?
It’s best to pre drill a pilot hole to prevent cracking
Just stucco
Thanks!
Hey buddy! Thanks for the tip!!!
So could you guage the difference in price for the same house built conventionally?
It’s about $20/sq ft more expensive to build a straw bale house, hiring everything out.
@@HeirloomBuilders thanks for the reply!
I like your presentation. I am building a new home with Perfect Block ICCF and am looking for a lost cost way to give the board and batten look. (Wife is set on Modern farmhouse). Steel siding is way out of this world in price, vinyl (will never use anyway) isn't that much cheaper than steel ( material cost). I am thinking maybe I can create a smooth surface with lime plaster and add some sort of battens?? Any thoughts, anyone? Also, how is the paintability of the lime plaster being that the breathable aspect is not a concern here?
I just bought the plans… thank you! I didn’t see what type of sand we should use listed on the plans… can you advise what type of sand to use? Thank you!
I’ll send you a bill of materials with sand specs
Your sequencing of events, stucco walls to bales of hay to wall studs to roof being placed is enough to make a person have an epileptic fit. Interesting build but disjointed presentation.
Will somebody shut that damn dog up 😂
Amen brother. You are not alone. What thoughts do you have about a delivery system for the drinking water into the house? thus making the spigot the contingent. Thx
We use a dankoff solar booster pump to get water from the cistern to a pressure tank and then to the house
Instead of crimping the terminals, use a solder pot and dip the connector with the wire in it. It's a 100% connection.
Will cause resistance
wouldn't there be air pockets trapped under the plastic?
Awesome bro
Hi Mr. Logan, this is Luca from Italy. So sorry for your wall crumbling down, but I am missing something. Why not apply lime (+fibers) directly on the strawbales? I mean, lime is corrosive towards zinc steel, but not towards timber, hemp and I imagine it is also not corrosive towards straw. I don't really understand the need for having clay at the outside part of the building. Not a single coat since it doesn't make a chemical bond. At the inside clay is perfect and in particularly damp rooms you use tadelakt or cocciopesto (the ancient roman style). For the outside, to protect the lime plaster why not use siloxane paint? This would add a water proof layer allowing at the same time the breathing of the wall. Thanks for sharing your experience, the good and the bad parts. Ciao!

Well sh1t! That’s some professional work right there! Excellent info and everything looks fantastic!
What do you have to do to make this work in the tropics, say South-East Asia?
How much
Depends on the design and most importantly how much you’ll be doing yourself versus hiring out.
I want to do this to my home as I need a new roof and already wanted T&G but the aesthetic cedar boards are so expensive it didn't seem worth it. If I were to do this, would i just cover the exterior with plywood so I could still have some insulation? I was thinking foam style roof since I have a 1/12 slope roof
Can you put whole branches in there with the end grain sealed?
9:49 umm. Well CO2 is what plants (trees) use to thrive and make oxygen in the process. . The planet surface is what? like 15% more green than 30 years ago. There’s a thousand reasons that a solar kiln is a good idea, but the idea that it is going to be ‘saving the planet’ is a bit bizarre. While there’s more scientifically sound reasons to reduce fossil fuel usage, the CO2 reason isn’t really one of them- it’s a popular dichotomy not a tenable promulgation.
6:59 those are gate hinges not strap hinges
How far down to nail 12 inch siding?
What if you live somewhere cold and rainy?
Probably gonna take a while for the lumber to dry in that case.
I'm so hungry to learn everything you're saying here, so it's really frustrating that you're talking over yourself... I've been looking everywhere for this kind of information, and I can't focus on two people talking at the same time saying different things. Add running the sound of the drill over the top of that?! Honestly, I'm so bummed...
Compost toilet video please!!!!!!!!!
I have to install as similar type of light but it has 2 white and 2 Black chords coming out of fixture. Do I connect the 2 Black wires to the black one coming out of ceiling as well as connect the 2 whites to the white one coming out of ceiling?
Yes. Double check with the instructions that came with the fixture though
@@HeirloomBuilders I don't have any instructions sdbi bought 3nd hand
If you are saving water off the roof u better not drink it if birds are shitting on it u can get a bird deceased
Thanks for sharing!
How do you ensure the kiln gets hot enough to sanitize the wood?
Great video! Thank you!
Does the moisture from the clay not damage the wooden beams? Wood lives, changes depending on temperature so... how does that work?
