in 1999 we bought a farm in Perry county, Arkansas. the water system was water pumped from our 1 acre STOCK POND(used by horses, cows, goats, dogs, a donkey, etc.... to drink from and wade in) to a 2 chamber sand filter and then pumped directly into the house to drink, shower, flush etc... the filter was 1 large rectangular tank with a divider going to within 4 inches from the bottom and filled to within 8 inches from the top with SAND on one side and only 12 inches deep on the other side. a submersible pump in the pond pumped to the high sand side through a float valve on the side of the tank. from there the water filtered down to the bottom and up into the other side of the tank and the height was the same as the other side. water was piped from the clean side via the intake pipe from a jet pump that went up the outside of the tank over the edge and down into the tank about a foot, where a screen was attached. this sand filter was originally used to filter the well water, but the water table was low, because the highway department had blasted the old bridge and water was flowing from our well out the side of the bank and into the river! we didnt have much water used the filter to filter pond water! before i moved in 2006, we put 3 IBC tanks side beside in a basement addition and then used REVERSE OSMOSIS and DC POWERED UV LAMPS IN HOME MADE MANIFOLD.

I like your presentation. I am building a new home with Perfect Block ICCF and am looking for a lost cost way to give the board and batten look. (Wife is set on Modern farmhouse). Steel siding is way out of this world in price, vinyl (will never use anyway) isn't that much cheaper than steel ( material cost). I am thinking maybe I can create a smooth surface with lime plaster and add some sort of battens?? Any thoughts, anyone? Also, how is the paintability of the lime plaster being that the breathable aspect is not a concern here?

Hi Mr. Logan, this is Luca from Italy. So sorry for your wall crumbling down, but I am missing something. Why not apply lime (+fibers) directly on the strawbales? I mean, lime is corrosive towards zinc steel, but not towards timber, hemp and I imagine it is also not corrosive towards straw. I don't really understand the need for having clay at the outside part of the building. Not a single coat since it doesn't make a chemical bond. At the inside clay is perfect and in particularly damp rooms you use tadelakt or cocciopesto (the ancient roman style). For the outside, to protect the lime plaster why not use siloxane paint? This would add a water proof layer allowing at the same time the breathing of the wall. Thanks for sharing your experience, the good and the bad parts. Ciao!

9:49 umm. Well CO2 is what plants (trees) use to thrive and make oxygen in the process. . The planet surface is what? like 15% more green than 30 years ago. There’s a thousand reasons that a solar kiln is a good idea, but the idea that it is going to be ‘saving the planet’ is a bit bizarre. While there’s more scientifically sound reasons to reduce fossil fuel usage, the CO2 reason isn’t really one of them- it’s a popular dichotomy not a tenable promulgation.
